Black Women Film Network (Aug 2017)
Black Women Film Network Mixer in Atlanta Georgia was awesome last night. It was a great opportunity to rub shoulders with some of the movers and shakers in the Atlanta film industry. I'm met producers, directors, actresses, photographers, acting coaches, hair consultants just all type of people who are building their brands in the Atl market. Established in 1997, the Black Women Film Network (BWFN) was founded to prepare black women to enter the film and television industries. The organization seeks to preserve the voice of these women through film and educational programs that empower and inform. (BWFN) provides student scholarships, hosts screenings and workshops, and honors individuals who have excelled in this difficult industry.
It's important to network and meet other people. Starting off we don't have all the answers and events like this put the right people in front of us so we know how to take our project to the next level. One thing that stood out to me particularly was you had to get permits and permission to film in the city of Atlanta. And permits cannot be issued in retrospect. Meaning if you make a film and it blows up and you need a permit you can't not get one after the fact. Im sure there will be some heavy penalty to pay, that's just my opinion not fact.
It's important for women in film to stay in touch and to lift one another up when opportunity presents itself. If you were an actress looking for a producer or a PR looking for clients events like these connect people and make this possible. With me being in production of my new documentary PRETTY FOR A DARK SKIN GIRL, I met a lady who does the voice overs and a lady who can help with funding and paperwork. And these were two things me and my team were concerned about. So maybe by networking with them these two concerns can be rectified. I'd like to give a special thanks to Be Positive Media CEO Brandi Dawson for allowing me to accompany her to this event. I am going to make sure that I follow up with some of my contacts and stay in touch because you never know when opportunity may present itself.
